Shipping mark meaning: definition, examples and a copy-ready template

A shipping mark is how a carton tells a warehouse who it belongs to. Get it right and cargo is sorted in seconds; get it wrong and the box sits in an unknown-parcel pile until someone opens it.

What a shipping mark actually means

A shipping mark (also called a cargo mark or case mark) is the identifying text and symbols applied to the outside of every package in a shipment. It is not decoration and it is not the carrier label: it is the agreed code that ties the physical box to the commercial documents — the purchase order, the packing list, the invoice and the bill of lading.

In a consolidation warehouse, dozens of suppliers deliver cartons for dozens of buyers on the same day. The shipping mark is the only thing on the outside that says which buyer a carton belongs to, which is exactly why intake systems read it first.

What a shipping mark must contain

  • Consignee name or buyer codethe short code your warehouse assigned to the customer.
  • Destinationport or city of discharge, and the final delivery city when they differ.
  • Carton numbersequential, written as 3/12 so a missing box is obvious.
  • Gross and net weightin kilograms.
  • Dimensionsin centimetres (L × W × H), used for volumetric weight.
  • Order / invoice referencethe number that also appears on the packing list.
  • Country of originrequired by most customs authorities.
  • Handling symbolsfragile, this-way-up, keep dry, stacking limit, hazard class.

Main marks vs side marks

Main marks go on the largest face and answer “whose box is this and where is it going?” — buyer code, destination, carton number. Side marks go on an adjacent face and answer “what is inside and how heavy is it?” — description, weights, dimensions, origin. Splitting them this way means a worker only needs to see one face to sort the carton.

Keep it to Latin characters and digits where possible. Handwritten Chinese-only marks are readable at the origin warehouse and unreadable at the destination one.

Five mistakes that create unknown parcels

  1. No buyer code — the carton arrives anonymous and goes to the unknown pile.
  2. Mark on one face only — the box lands mark-down on the pallet.
  3. Old marks not removed when a carton is reused.
  4. Carton numbers restarting per supplier instead of per shipment.
  5. Marks that do not match the packing list, which breaks letter-of-credit compliance.

How TikTrake uses shipping marks

At intake, a warehouse worker photographs the carton — straight from the camera or by uploading from a gallery — and TikTrake's OCR reads the shipping mark to pull out the buyer code, weight, carton count and phone number. If that carton has already been scanned, the system blocks the duplicate entry instead of creating a second record. The mark is only needed for this automatic match: staff can still register a parcel manually without one if it is missing or unreadable. Cartons TikTrake cannot match to a buyer code go into an unknown parcels queue instead of being guessed at. A manager reviews that queue and links each carton to the right customer in one tap. Every parcel and customer stays scoped to its own warehouse (hosting code), so a manager only ever sees stock that belongs to their own site.

Frequently asked questions

What is a shipping mark?
A shipping mark is the set of identifying text and symbols printed or stencilled on the outside of a carton, crate or pallet. It links the physical package to the consignee, the purchase order and the bill of lading so the cargo can be sorted without opening it.
What information must a shipping mark contain?
At minimum: consignee name or code, destination port or city, package number in the series (e.g. 3/12), gross and net weight, dimensions, and the order or invoice reference. Handling and hazard symbols are added when required.
What is the difference between main marks and side marks?
Main marks identify the buyer and the destination and appear on the largest face of the carton. Side marks carry the technical details — weight, dimensions, carton number and country of origin — and are printed on an adjacent face.
Is a shipping mark legally required?
Marking is not universally mandatory, but most customs authorities require country-of-origin marking, and letters of credit and purchase contracts usually specify exact shipping marks. Mismatched marks are a common cause of documentary discrepancies.
